Virginia Department of Fire Programs monitors legislation and other policy developments impacting Virginia’s fire and emergency services community, both at the state and federal level. The policy staff acts as legislative liaisons for the Fire and EMS community.
The Virginia General Assembly convenes once each year on the second Wednesday in January. During an even-numbered year the legislature meets for 60 days and during an odd-numbered year the legislature meets for 30 days. Additionally, the General Assembly reconvenes on the sixth Wednesday after adjournment of each regular or special session to consider bills which have been returned by the Governor for the purposes of amendments or a gubernatorial veto.
During the Virginia General Assembly Session, VDFP monitors legislation impacting Virginia’s fire and emergency medical services and provides a weekly tracking report. Upon conclusion of each session, VDFP publishes a final tracking report.
